The papers

English: 60 minutes, plus 10 minutes' reading timeTests Key Stage 2 National Curriculum content. Worth 50% of the marks.
Maths: 60 minutesTests Key Stage 2 National Curriculum content. Worth 50% of the marks.

Two papers, equally weighted

The CSSE's guide describes two assessments, English and Mathematics. Each is standardised and counts for half of the marks, so neither subject can be left to chance.

Ten minutes to read

The English paper gives ten minutes of reading time on top of the hour. Practise using it: read the passage carefully once, then read the questions.

An alternative test date

This year the CSSE offered a second date, Tuesday 29 September 2026, for children who could not sit the main Saturday test because of religious objection, or illness with medical evidence. For other exceptional circumstances it asks families to contact the CSSE office.

Five CSSE-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method.

1. What is 15% of 240?
  • A) 24
  • B) 36
  • C) 40
  • D) 48
Answer: B) 36. Find 10% first: 240 ÷ 10 = 24. Then 5% is half of that, which is 12. Add them: 24 + 12 = 36.
2. What is the mean of 4, 7, 9 and 12?
  • A) 7
  • B) 8
  • C) 9
  • D) 32
Answer: B) 8. Add the numbers: 4 + 7 + 9 + 12 = 32. Divide by how many numbers there are: 32 ÷ 4 = 8.
3. A recipe uses 250 g of flour to make 10 biscuits. How much flour is needed for 24 biscuits?
  • A) 500 g
  • B) 550 g
  • C) 600 g
  • D) 625 g
Answer: C) 600 g. Find the flour for one biscuit: 250 ÷ 10 = 25 g. Multiply by 24: 25 × 24 = 600 g.
4. Choose the word that best completes this sentence. The explorers were ___ after walking all day without food.
  • A) exhausted
  • B) delighted
  • C) curious
  • D) generous
Answer: A) exhausted. Walking all day without food would leave someone very tired. Exhausted means very tired, so it fits. Delighted, curious and generous do not follow from a long, hungry walk.
5. Which word is the adverb in this sentence? The fox crept silently across the frozen field.
  • A) fox
  • B) crept
  • C) silently
  • D) frozen
Answer: C) silently. An adverb tells you how, when or where something is done. Silently tells you how the fox crept. Fox is a noun, crept is a verb and frozen is an adjective describing the field.
