The two papers

Paper 1: about 50 to 60 minutesMultiple choice, with answers marked on a separate answer sheet. The time includes instructions and example questions. The familiarisation guide says each paper has four types of question: verbal reasoning, non-verbal and spatial reasoning, English and mathematics.
Paper 2: about 50 to 60 minutesThe same format as Paper 1. The familiarisation guide says the instructions are given on an audio soundtrack.

One test for 19 schools

The partnership lists 19 grammar schools in three groups: eight in Birmingham, five in the Shropshire, Wolverhampton and Walsall consortium and six in Warwickshire. Warwickshire County Council says the same papers are used across all the authorities, and that families can choose to have results shared if they plan to apply to grammar schools in more than one area.

Half the marks are for English and verbal reasoning

The schools publish the weighting: English and verbal reasoning together count for 50%, with 25% each for non-verbal reasoning and mathematics. Scores are standardised to take account of age, so younger children in the year group are not at a disadvantage.

Dates depend on where you register

Registration is through the West Midlands Grammar Schools website, where you find your test centre. This year the test fell on different days at different centres and the registration deadline was not the same everywhere, so check the dates for your own centre and council.

What the schools say about preparing

The schools say intensive coaching or tuition is not in a child's long term best interests, and that none of the schools keep past papers. They publish a familiarisation guide and point families to GL Assessment's free sample materials.

Watches, timers and stop clocks of any kind are not allowed in the test, so it helps to practise without one.

Qualifying scores

Each school or group of schools sets out in its own admissions policy what score is needed and how places are decided. Read the policy for each school you are considering.

Five West Midlands-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method. The real non-verbal reasoning questions use shapes and patterns, which we cannot show here.

1. Which word is most opposite in meaning to conceal?
  • A) hide
  • B) cover
  • C) forget
  • D) reveal
Answer: D) reveal. Conceal means to hide something. Reveal means to show it, so it is the opposite. Hide and cover are close in meaning to conceal, not opposite.
2. Read this sentence: "The canal boat nosed slowly out of the lock as the gates groaned open." What does the word groaned suggest about the gates?
  • A) They were new and shiny
  • B) They opened without a sound
  • C) They were heavy and made a low creaking noise
  • D) They had just been painted
Answer: C) They were heavy and made a low creaking noise. A groan is a long, low sound. Using it for the gates suggests they are heavy and creak as they move. Nothing in the sentence is about paint or newness.
3. A tram ticket costs £2.35. How many pounds do 8 tickets cost?
  • A) 18.80
  • B) 16.80
  • C) 18.40
  • D) 19.20
Answer: A) 18.80. Multiply in parts. 8 × £2 = £16 and 8 × 35p = 280p, which is £2.80. Add them: £16 + £2.80 = £18.80.
4. Which pair of letters comes next? BY, DW, FU, HS, ...
  • A) IR
  • B) JQ
  • C) JR
  • D) KQ
Answer: B) JQ. The first letters move forward two places each time: B, D, F, H, J. The second letters move back two places: Y, W, U, S, Q. The next pair is JQ.
5. What number comes next in this sequence? 81, 72, 64, 57, 51, ...
  • A) 44
  • B) 45
  • C) 46
  • D) 47
Answer: C) 46. Look at the gaps: 9, 8, 7, 6. The amount taken away goes down by one each time, so the next step is to take away 5. 51 − 5 = 46.
