EnglishMultiple choice and age-standardised. The school does not publish its length or the number of questions.

What the school says about practice papers

The school points families to GL Assessment's free sample materials. It advises against using practice papers from anywhere other than GL Assessment, and says organisations that charge large sums for practice papers are not associated with the school. Our questions are our own and are not GL Assessment papers.

How places are decided

The school's booklet says there is no fixed pass mark. A minimum standard is set each year. Reaching it does not by itself mean a place: the 2027 entry policy ranks boys who meet the standard by its oversubscription criteria. These start with looked after and previously looked after children, then boys in the priority catchment area (the City of Lancaster), with those eligible for Pupil Premium first, then the wider residual catchment area, then boys living outside it. Some categories include boys scoring up to 5% below the minimum level. Read the policy for the full order.

A quick turnaround

This year the application deadline was less than three weeks before the tests, and results were sent to arrive by Tuesday 6 October 2026, ten days after them. The dates for 2028 entry are not yet published.

Five Lancaster Royal Grammar-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method.

1. A coach has 53 seats. How many seats are there on 7 of these coaches?
  • A) 351
  • B) 361
  • C) 371
  • D) 381
Answer: C) 371. Split 53 into 50 and 3. 50 × 7 = 350 and 3 × 7 = 21. Add them: 350 + 21 = 371.
2. What is 45% of 260?
  • A) 117
  • B) 104
  • C) 126
  • D) 130
Answer: A) 117. 10% of 260 is 26, so 40% is 104. 5% is half of 10%, which is 13. Add them: 104 + 13 = 117.
3. Which word is the conjunction in this sentence? We stayed indoors because the rain was heavy.
  • A) stayed
  • B) indoors
  • C) heavy
  • D) because
Answer: D) because. A conjunction joins two parts of a sentence. Because joins "We stayed indoors" to "the rain was heavy". Stayed is a verb, indoors is an adverb and heavy is an adjective.
4. Which word is closest in meaning to feeble?
  • A) brave
  • B) weak
  • C) clever
  • D) tidy
Answer: B) weak. Feeble means lacking strength. Weak means the same. Brave, clever and tidy have different meanings.
5. In a code, CAT is written as DBU. Using the same code, how is PEN written?
  • A) QFO
  • B) QDO
  • C) OFM
  • D) QFM
Answer: A) QFO. Each letter moves on one place in the alphabet: C to D, A to B, T to U. So P becomes Q, E becomes F and N becomes O, which gives QFO.
