Paper 2: about one hourSat after a short break. The school says ranking is decided by adding together the age-standardised scores of both papers.

What is published for 2028 entry so far

Kendrick School already has a page for September 2028 entry. It says the open event for current Year 5s will be in April 2027, with details on its website early in 2027. It says the admissions policy should be available in January 2027, once ratified by its trustees. The page has a form you can fill in to be emailed when more information is published. The format described on this page is the one the school published for September 2027 entry. It has not yet confirmed the format for 2028 entry.

No creative writing

The school says there is no creative writing element to the admission tests. The two papers cover English, mathematics, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.

Where you live matters

The school has a designated area. Its page for 2027 entry says that no candidate living outside the designated area, whatever score they attained, has been offered a place since the designated area was introduced in 2013. Check the designated area on the school's website before you plan around this school.

Register well before the test

This year the online application form closed at midnight on 1 July 2026, more than two months before the tests on 18 September 2026 for candidates living in the designated area. Candidates could not choose a morning or afternoon session. The dates for 2028 entry are not yet published.

Five Kendrick-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method.

1. An urn holds 6.3 litres of squash. How many 450 ml beakers can be filled from it?
  • A) 12
  • B) 13
  • C) 14
  • D) 16
Answer: C) 14. Change litres to millilitres: 6.3 litres = 6300 ml. Divide by the size of a beaker: 6300 ÷ 450 = 14 beakers.
2. Which word is closest in meaning to dawdle?
  • A) hurry
  • B) shout
  • C) tumble
  • D) linger
Answer: D) linger. To dawdle is to move slowly and waste time. Linger means to stay or move slowly, so it is closest. Hurry is the opposite.
3. Which of these sentences about Mina is written in the past tense?
  • A) Mina swept the yard
  • B) Mina is sweeping the yard
  • C) Mina will sweep the yard
  • D) Mina sweeps the yard
Answer: A) Mina swept the yard. The past tense tells you something has already happened. Swept is the past tense of sweep. "Is sweeping" and "sweeps" are present tense, and "will sweep" is future.
4. What number comes next in this sequence? 4, 9, 19, 39, 79, ...
  • A) 119
  • B) 159
  • C) 149
  • D) 158
Answer: B) 159. Each number is double the one before, plus 1: 4 × 2 + 1 = 9, 9 × 2 + 1 = 19, 19 × 2 + 1 = 39, 39 × 2 + 1 = 79. So the next is 79 × 2 + 1 = 159.
5. A jumper costs £36. In a sale its price is cut by 25%. What is the sale price, in pounds?
  • A) 9
  • B) 24
  • C) 27
  • D) 29
Answer: C) 27. 25% is one quarter. A quarter of £36 is £9. Take that off the price: £36 − £9 = £27.
