The two papers

Verbal Skills: 45 minutes of timed sectionsEnglish for 25 minutes, with 26 questions in total covering comprehension, spelling and grammar. Then Verbal Reasoning for 20 minutes, with 32 questions.
Non-Verbal Reasoning with Mathematics: 45 minutes of timed sectionsTwo non-verbal reasoning sections of 20 questions each, with 10 minutes per section. Then a mathematics section of approximately 25 questions in 25 minutes, which the council says covers content up to the end of Year 5 of the national curriculum.

A new format from September 2026

North Yorkshire Council's page describes these two papers as the format from September 2026. English and maths are tested alongside reasoning, so older practice material that covers reasoning only does not match the test.

Short, tightly timed sections

The council publishes the length of each section. The non-verbal reasoning sections give 10 minutes for 20 questions, and the verbal reasoning section gives 20 minutes for 32. It helps to practise sections of those sizes against the clock.

How places are decided

The council says the results are used to find the highest scoring 28%, or as close as possible, of the Year 6 children who live in the Ripon area. That sets the cut-off mark. The council also says that reaching the cut-off does not guarantee a place if the school is oversubscribed. Its oversubscription criteria then apply, and the school says boarders must reach the same standard as day students.

What the council says about preparing

The council says coaching for the tests is not required. GL Assessment produces familiarisation booklets for the test and offers free practice material on its own website.

Five Ripon Grammar-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method.

1. Seven identical notebooks cost £9.45 in total. How many pence does one notebook cost?
  • A) 125
  • B) 135
  • C) 145
  • D) 155
Answer: B) 135. £9.45 is 945p. Divide by 7: 7 × 100 = 700, leaving 245, and 245 ÷ 7 = 35. So one notebook costs 100 + 35 = 135p.
2. A rectangle is 13 cm long and 8.5 cm wide. What is its perimeter in centimetres?
  • A) 43
  • B) 21.5
  • C) 34
  • D) 110.5
Answer: A) 43. Add the length and the width: 13 + 8.5 = 21.5. The perimeter goes round all four sides, so double it: 21.5 × 2 = 43 cm.
3. Only one of these words has the correct spelling. Which is it?
  • A) goverment
  • B) enviroment
  • C) parliament
  • D) temprature
Answer: C) parliament. Parliament is correct, with an a after the i. The others should be government, environment and temperature, so each of them has a letter missing.
4. Petal is to flower as page is to which word?
  • A) paper
  • B) library
  • C) write
  • D) book
Answer: D) book. A petal is one part of a flower. In the same way, a page is one part of a book.
5. What number comes next in this sequence? 81, 74, 67, 60, ...
  • A) 54
  • B) 53
  • C) 52
  • D) 51
Answer: B) 53. Each number is 7 less than the one before: 81 − 7 = 74, 74 − 7 = 67, 67 − 7 = 60. Take 7 from 60 to get 53.

What a Year 5 parent can do now

  1. Look at the familiarisation booklets and GL Assessment's free practice material together, so your child knows what the two papers look like.
  2. Start short, regular practice in English, maths and both kinds of reasoning now, and add timed sections later in Year 5.
  3. Check North Yorkshire Council's selective schools page in the spring of 2027 for the 2028 entry dates. This year registration ran from 30 April to 30 June 2026, well before the test.
