The two papers

Verbal skills: 50 to 55 minutesReading comprehension, the technical skills of spelling, punctuation and grammar, and verbal reasoning. All questions are multiple choice.
Non-verbal reasoning and maths: 50 to 55 minutesNon-verbal reasoning, and mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding. All questions are multiple choice.

How the papers are marked

The school says the answer sheets are read by machine and that all marks are standardised according to the boy's age in years and months to give a final score.

There is no fixed pass mark. The admissions policy says the qualifying standard is not a pre-defined mark but is set by reference to the scores of the boys sitting the test. The policy also says the qualifying standard for boys who are eligible for Pupil Premium will be 10% lower.

Meeting the standard is not an offer

The school's results letter says whether a boy has met the qualifying standard. The school is clear that this letter is not an offer of a place. Places are then decided under the oversubscription rules in the admissions policy, which include the school's designated area.

You need to complete two forms: the school's own 11+ application form and your local authority's secondary application form. This year the local authority form for September 2027 entry opened on 1 September 2026 and closes on 31 October 2026.

The school's familiarisation courses

The school runs 11+ familiarisation courses for boys and girls in Year 5. Each course is six after-school sessions with a 40-minute English lesson and a 40-minute maths lesson. The dates shown when we checked were for spring and summer 2026, so look for new dates for your child's year.

The school says attending these classes is not part of its admission process.

Five Bishop Wordsworth's-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method. We have left out non-verbal reasoning here because those questions need pictures.

1. A crate holds 18 bottles. How many bottles are there in 27 crates?
  • A) 468
  • B) 476
  • C) 486
  • D) 496
Answer: C) 486. Work out 18 × 20 = 360 and 18 × 7 = 126. Add them: 360 + 126 = 486.
2. A rectangle has a perimeter of 46 cm. Its length is 14 cm. What is its width in centimetres?
  • A) 9
  • B) 16
  • C) 18
  • D) 32
Answer: A) 9. Half the perimeter is one length plus one width: 46 ÷ 2 = 23. Take away the length: 23 − 14 = 9.
3. Which word in this sentence is a preposition? The fox slept beneath the hedge.
  • A) fox
  • B) slept
  • C) hedge
  • D) beneath
Answer: D) beneath. A preposition shows where or when something is in relation to something else. Beneath tells you where the fox slept in relation to the hedge. Fox and hedge are nouns and slept is the verb.
4. Which one of these words has a spelling mistake?
  • A) rhythm
  • B) goverment
  • C) privilege
  • D) embarrass
Answer: B) goverment. The correct spelling is government, with an n before the m. Think of the word govern inside it. The other three are spelt correctly.
5. Which word can go in front of ball, print and step to make three new words?
  • A) hand
  • B) foot
  • C) door
  • D) snow
Answer: B) foot. Foot makes football, footprint and footstep. Hand makes handball and handprint, but handstep is not a word, so only foot works for all three.

What a Year 5 parent can do now

  1. Read the school's Year 7 admissions page and its frequently asked questions, so you know the two forms you will need to complete.
  2. Start short, regular practice in English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning now, and add timed sets later in Year 5.
  3. Check the school's Year 7 admissions page early in the spring term of 2027 for the 2028 entry dates. This year its 11+ applications opened on Wednesday 25 March 2026. The school's page and its policy give different closing dates (3 July and 1 September 2026), so apply early and check the deadline with the school.
