The papers

Paper 1: about 60 minutesPart of a test of verbal, non-verbal and mathematical skills. The council does not publish section timings on its test page.
Paper 2: about 60 minutesSat after a break.

A practice test, then the real one

The council says there is a shorter practice test, usually two days before the main test, to help children learn what to expect. It is the Transfer Test that counts.

Buckinghamshire state primary pupils are entered automatically

Children at state-funded Buckinghamshire primary schools are entered for the test automatically and do not need to register. Other families register with the council during the registration window.

You cannot choose the time or place

The council allocates the test time, date and venue. Children tested at a grammar school or central venue must bring a completed identification form with a photograph, and the council says it cannot test a child without it.

Five Transfer Test-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method.

1. Which word is the opposite of ancient?
  • A) old
  • B) modern
  • C) historic
  • D) fragile
Answer: B) modern. Ancient means very old. The opposite is modern, which means new or of the present day. Old and historic are close in meaning to ancient, and fragile means easily broken.
2. In a code, CAT is written as DBU. Using the same code, how is DOG written?
  • A) EPH
  • B) CNF
  • C) EPG
  • D) DPH
Answer: A) EPH. Each letter moves one place forward in the alphabet: C to D, A to B, T to U. Do the same to DOG: D to E, O to P, G to H, giving EPH.
3. A rectangle is 9 cm long and 6 cm wide. What is its perimeter?
  • A) 15 cm
  • B) 30 cm
  • C) 36 cm
  • D) 54 cm
Answer: B) 30 cm. The perimeter is the distance all the way round. Add the length and the width, 9 + 6 = 15, then double it because there are two of each side: 15 × 2 = 30 cm.
4. Tickets cost £7.50 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
  • A) £42.00
  • B) £45.00
  • C) £47.50
  • D) £48.00
Answer: B) £45.00. Multiply the pounds and the pence separately: 6 × £7 = £42 and 6 × 50p = £3. Add them together to get £45.00.
5. Three of these words belong together. Which is the odd one out? oak, elm, birch, tulip
  • A) oak
  • B) elm
  • C) birch
  • D) tulip
Answer: D) tulip. Oak, elm and birch are all kinds of tree. A tulip is a flower, so it is the one that does not belong.
