The two parts

Part I: Verbal Reasoning, 50 minutesA multiple-choice paper of 80 questions, provided by GL Assessment. Raw scores are converted to age-standardised scores by the test provider, based on the child's age in completed months.
Part II English: one hourA comprehension paper that includes an extended writing piece. It is written internally by the school.
Part II Mathematics: one hourFollows the English paper. It is written internally by the school.

80 questions in 50 minutes

That works out at under 40 seconds a question, so Part I rewards steady pace as well as knowledge. Timed practice helps a child learn not to get stuck on one question.

Part I decides who sits Part II

The school says children ranked within the top 325 are invited to sit Part II. Children ranked below position 325 are not eligible for further consideration under its academic criterion. The English and Maths results are age-standardised and combined with the Verbal Reasoning result to give a total combined mark.

Check where you live before registering

The school asks parents to check that their child lives within one of its Local Priority Areas before registering. It says it cannot accept registrations after the closing date, and that only one application is allowed for each child.

When the dates appear

The school says it aims to provide test dates by the end of the autumn term for tests taking place later in the year, so that parents can make sure their child is available. We read that as meaning the dates for the September 2027 tests should appear towards the end of this term, so it is worth checking its key dates page then.

Five Dame Alice Owen's-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method. The real Part II English paper includes an extended piece of writing; we use multiple choice here only so you can check quickly.

1. Which word can go in front of all four of these to make new words? light, flower, burn, rise
  • A) moon
  • B) day
  • C) sun
  • D) star
Answer: C) sun. Sun makes sunlight, sunflower, sunburn and sunrise. Each of the other words fails with at least one ending: moonburn, dayburn and starburn are not words.
2. Which pair of letters comes next? AZ, CX, EV, GT, ...
  • A) HS
  • B) IR
  • C) IS
  • D) JQ
Answer: B) IR. The first letters move forward two places each time: A, C, E, G, I. The second letters move back two places: Z, X, V, T, R. The next pair is IR.
3. Which number completes the sum? 48 ÷ 6 = 3 × ? − 13
  • A) 7
  • B) 5
  • C) 6
  • D) 9
Answer: A) 7. The left side is 48 ÷ 6 = 8. So 3 times the missing number, take away 13, must equal 8. Add 13 to get 21, then divide by 3 to get 7.
4. Which word in this sentence is an adverb? The old gate creaked noisily in the wind.
  • A) old
  • B) creaked
  • C) wind
  • D) noisily
Answer: D) noisily. An adverb tells you how something is done. Noisily tells you how the gate creaked. Old is an adjective, creaked is a verb and wind is a noun.
5. A recipe uses 350 g of flour to make 14 biscuits. How many grams of flour are needed for 22 biscuits?
  • A) 500
  • B) 525
  • C) 550
  • D) 575
Answer: C) 550. Find the flour for one biscuit: 350 ÷ 14 = 25 g. Multiply by 22: 25 × 22 = 550 g.
