The two rounds

Round One: verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and EnglishThe school calls this its First Round Entrance Test. Its admissions page does not give the length of the Round One tests or the number of questions.
Round Two English: 60 minutesThis year (2027 entry) only the top 300 candidates from Round One were invited to Round Two. Not yet confirmed for 2028 entry.
Round Two Maths: 50 minutesThis year (2027 entry) it was sat by the same 300 candidates.

Round One comes at the very start of Year 6

This year Round One was on 2, 3 and 4 September 2026. If the pattern holds, girls in Year 5 now would sit it in early September 2027, so most of the preparation happens in Year 5 and over the summer holiday. The school has not yet published the 2028 entry dates.

Only 300 go through to Round Two

The school says the top 300 candidates are invited to sit Round Two. This year it said it would write to all candidates with the outcome of Round One by Monday 28 September 2026, and Round Two was on Tuesday 6 October 2026. That left about a week between the letter and the second round.

What the school does not publish on its page

The admissions page does not give the length of the Round One tests or the number of questions in any paper. Where our Henrietta Barnett-style mock uses timings for Round One, they are our own estimate.

Five Henrietta Barnett-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method.

1. A baker packs 432 scones into boxes of 18. How many boxes does she fill?
  • A) 22
  • B) 24
  • C) 26
  • D) 28
Answer: B) 24. Divide 432 by 18. 18 × 20 = 360, which leaves 72. 18 × 4 = 72. So 20 + 4 = 24 boxes.
2. Which word is closest in meaning to meagre?
  • A) generous
  • B) cheerful
  • C) clumsy
  • D) scanty
Answer: D) scanty. Meagre means very small in amount. Scanty means the same. Generous is nearly the opposite, and cheerful and clumsy have different meanings.
3. Which sentence uses a semicolon correctly?
  • A) The rain had stopped; the pitch was still too wet to play on
  • B) We packed; apples, bread and cheese
  • C) Although it was late; she kept reading
  • D) My brother; who is seven, loves trains
Answer: A) The rain had stopped; the pitch was still too wet to play on. A semicolon joins two parts that could each be a sentence on their own. "The rain had stopped" and "the pitch was still too wet to play on" both make sense alone. In the other sentences one side of the semicolon is not a full sentence.
4. In a code, LAMP is written as MBNQ. Using the same code, how is DESK written?
  • A) CDRJ
  • B) EFSL
  • C) EFTL
  • D) FGUM
Answer: C) EFTL. Each letter moves on one place in the alphabet: L to M, A to B, M to N, P to Q. So D becomes E, E becomes F, S becomes T and K becomes L, which gives EFTL.
5. At a village fete a jar of chutney costs £3.75 and a loaf costs £2.25. Mrs Okafor buys 4 jars and 5 loaves. How much does she spend, in pounds?
  • A) 25.25
  • B) 26.25
  • C) 26.75
  • D) 27.25
Answer: B) 26.25. Four jars cost 4 × £3.75 = £15. Five loaves cost 5 × £2.25 = £11.25. Add them: £15 + £11.25 = £26.25.

What a Year 5 parent can do now

  1. Look out for the school's open day in the summer term of 2027. It holds only one a year and does not offer individual or small group visits.
  2. Start short, regular practice in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and maths now, and add timed papers before the summer holiday.
  3. Check the school's admissions page from spring 2027 for how and when to register for 2028 entry. This year Round One was on 2, 3 and 4 September 2026.
