The three papers

English comprehension: 35 minutesA multiple-choice comprehension paper.

Register early: the deadline comes before most schools'

This year registration opened on Friday 1 May 2026, in the summer term of Year 5, and closed at midday on Monday 12 October 2026. If the pattern holds, registration for 2028 entry would open around May 2027, while your child is still in Year 5. Requests for learning support arrangements, with documents, were due by the same deadline.

Descriptive writing, not a story

The second English paper asks for descriptive writing. That is a different skill from telling a story. It helps to practise precise vocabulary, the senses and well-controlled sentences.

A long maths paper

Sixty minutes is a long paper at this age. Some practice should be done as a full hour, so your child learns to keep working carefully to the end.

After the exam

The school writes to each child's current school for a reference. Selected candidates are invited back for an Interview Session: a half day of learning activities in classrooms and a one-to-one interview. This year decisions are sent to all candidates on Tuesday 8 December 2026 and the Interview Day is Wednesday 6 January 2027. Offer decisions are due in February 2027, on a date the school has still to confirm.

Five Latymer Upper-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method. In the real exam the comprehension paper is multiple choice, while the writing paper needs a written answer; we use multiple choice throughout here so you can check quickly.

1. Tickets cost £7.50 for an adult and £4.25 for a child. What is the total cost, in pounds, for 2 adults and 3 children?

A) 27.75
B) 26.25
C) 23.50
D) 28.75

Answer: A) 27.75. Two adults cost 2 × £7.50 = £15. Three children cost 3 × £4.25 = £12.75. Add them: £15 + £12.75 = £27.75.

2. The mean of four numbers is 17. Three of the numbers are 12, 19 and 21. What is the fourth number?

A) 14
B) 16
C) 15
D) 17

Answer: B) 16. If the mean of four numbers is 17, they add up to 4 × 17 = 68. The three you know add up to 12 + 19 + 21 = 52. The fourth is 68 − 52 = 16.

3. Which of these contains a simile?

A) The wind howled all night
B) The frost was a white blanket
C) The lake lay as still as glass
D) Seven silver swans swam south

Answer: C) The lake lay as still as glass. A simile compares two things using as or like. "As still as glass" compares the lake to glass. "The frost was a white blanket" is a metaphor, because it says the frost was a blanket.

4. On a map, 1 cm stands for 250 m. Two villages are 9 cm apart on the map. How many km apart are they?

A) 22.5
B) 2.5
C) 2.25
D) 0.225

Answer: C) 2.25. Multiply the map distance by the scale: 9 × 250 = 2250 m. There are 1000 m in a km, so 2250 m = 2.25 km.

5. Which word is the conjunction in this sentence? Although the tide was rising, the children kept digging.

A) tide
B) rising
C) kept
D) Although

Answer: D) Although. A conjunction joins two parts of a sentence. Although links "the tide was rising" to "the children kept digging". Tide is a noun, and rising and kept are verbs.

Put the registration window in your diary now. This year it opened on Friday 1 May 2026 and closed at midday on Monday 12 October 2026, so check the school's 11+ page from around May 2027 for the 2028 entry dates.
Look at the school's sample papers together, then start short, regular practice in comprehension, descriptive writing and maths.
Visit the school: this year its 11+ Open Days were on Saturday 12 September and Saturday 3 October 2026, before registration closed on Monday 12 October 2026.
