The six sections

Maths: 20 minutesAdaptive, so the questions change depending on the answers given.
Non-Verbal Reasoning: 10 minutesAdaptive.
English: 20 minutesQuestions on a piece of fiction written for the Consortium. The Consortium's page describes these questions as adaptive. Channing School's page lists English as non-adaptive.
Verbal Reasoning: 10 minutesAdaptive. A 30-minute break follows.
Problem Solving: 15 minutesNot adaptive. Channing School calls this section Puzzles and Problem Solving.
Creative Comprehension: 25 minutesNot adaptive.

Short, separately timed sections

No section is longer than 25 minutes and two are only 10. It helps to practise working at a steady pace in short bursts, as well as building up to the full 100 minutes.

Sit it once, apply to each school

The Consortium says candidates sit the assessment only once, however many Consortium schools they are applying to. Each school has its own admissions page and publishes its own dates, so check the application process and deadline for every school you are interested in. The Consortium says how schools make their decisions, and how many candidates they invite to interview, are at each school's discretion.

The Consortium's own dates are out of date

When we checked, the Consortium's website still showed dates for entry in September 2025. For current dates, go to the admissions page of each school you are interested in. Channing School, for example, has published its dates for 2027 entry, and says it interviews all its applicants whatever their assessment result.

Familiarisation

The Consortium's website links to familiarisation materials for the online assessment. Channing School recommends its applicants practise the London 11+ Consortium Familiarisation Test to understand the six areas of the assessment.

Five London 11+ Consortium-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method.

1. What is 18% of 350?
  • A) 53
  • B) 63
  • C) 68
  • D) 72
Answer: B) 63. 10% of 350 is 35. 1% is 3.5, so 8% is 8 × 3.5 = 28. Add them: 35 + 28 = 63.
2. Which word can be added to the end of sun, day and moon to make three new words?
  • A) shine
  • B) time
  • C) light
  • D) beam
Answer: C) light. Sunlight, daylight and moonlight are all words. Shine and beam work with sun and moon but not with day, and time works only with day.
3. Pencils are sold in packs of 6 and rubbers in packs of 8. What is the smallest number of pencils you can buy so that you can buy exactly the same number of rubbers?
  • A) 14
  • B) 48
  • C) 12
  • D) 24
Answer: D) 24. You need the smallest number that is in both the 6 and the 8 times tables. Multiples of 8 are 8, 16, 24. 24 is also 4 × 6, so the answer is 24: four packs of pencils and three packs of rubbers.
4. Which word best completes this sentence? The climbers were ___ by the thick fog and had to turn back.
  • A) hindered
  • B) encouraged
  • C) delighted
  • D) invited
Answer: A) hindered. The climbers had to turn back, so the fog got in their way. Hindered means held back or made difficult. The other words do not fit with turning back.
5. A film starts at 6:35 pm and lasts 1 hour 48 minutes. At what time does it end?
  • A) 8:13 pm
  • B) 8:33 pm
  • C) 8:23 pm
  • D) 7:23 pm
Answer: C) 8:23 pm. Add the hour first: 6:35 pm becomes 7:35 pm. Then add 48 minutes: 25 minutes takes you to 8:00 pm, and the other 23 minutes takes you to 8:23 pm.

What a Year 5 parent can do now

  1. Make a list of the Consortium schools you are interested in and read each one's admissions page, because each sets its own deadline, assessment day and interview arrangements.
  2. Try the familiarisation materials linked from the Consortium's website, so the on-screen format is not a surprise, and start short, regular practice in maths, English and reasoning.
  3. Check each school's admissions page in the summer and autumn of 2027 for the 2028 entry dates. At Channing School this year the application deadline is 6 November 2026 and the assessment day is 27 November 2026.
