The two stages

Stage 1: Selective Entrance Test (SET), 1 hourMultiple-choice questions in English, Logic (both verbal and non-verbal reasoning) and Mathematics. Answers are entered in HB pencil on a separate answer sheet.
Stage 2: English and MathematicsTwo papers for the boys invited back. The school asks candidates to bring blue or black pens for the English paper, and pencils, an eraser and a ruler for the Mathematics paper.

The application window is three weeks in June

To sit the test you fill in the school's Supplementary Information Form. For 2028 entry it opens at 9am on Monday 7 June 2027 and closes at midday on Monday 28 June 2027, while your child is still in Year 5. The school's open evening is on Thursday 24 June 2027, from 3.30pm to 7.30pm.

How the two stages fit together

The school says the top 450 boys in Stage 1 are invited to Stage 2, and that all 450 have met the minimum standard for entry. Places then depend on the final rank order after Stage 2. Only boys who sit both tests are considered. The school shares the final rank order only with the local authority, so families find out on National Offer Day, Wednesday 1 March 2028.

Four areas in one hour

Stage 1 covers English, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths in a single hour. The school's test page does not say how the hour is divided, so it helps to practise moving quickly between question types.

Sample questions, not past papers

The school publishes sample questions for both stages and an example of the Stage 1 answer sheet on its entrance test page. It says it does not provide past papers.

Five St Olave's-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method. Stage 1 is multiple choice. The Stage 2 papers ask for written answers; we use multiple choice here only so you can check quickly.

1. A number is doubled and then 9 is subtracted. The answer is 37. What was the number?
  • A) 14
  • B) 19
  • C) 23
  • D) 28
Answer: C) 23. Work backwards. Add the 9 back: 37 + 9 = 46. Then halve: 46 ÷ 2 = 23. Check: 23 × 2 = 46 and 46 − 9 = 37.
2. What is the sum of all the prime numbers between 20 and 40?
  • A) 120
  • B) 112
  • C) 127
  • D) 143
Answer: A) 120. The primes between 20 and 40 are 23, 29, 31 and 37. Add them: 23 + 29 = 52, and 31 + 37 = 68. 52 + 68 = 120.
3. Asha is taller than Ben. Ben is taller than Cora. Dev is shorter than Cora. Who is the second shortest?
  • A) Asha
  • B) Ben
  • C) Dev
  • D) Cora
Answer: D) Cora. Put them in order from tallest to shortest: Asha, Ben, Cora, Dev. Dev is the shortest, so the second shortest is Cora.
4. What number comes next in this sequence? 2, 5, 11, 23, 47, ...
  • A) 91
  • B) 95
  • C) 97
  • D) 99
Answer: B) 95. Each number is double the one before, plus 1: 2 × 2 + 1 = 5, 5 × 2 + 1 = 11, and so on. So the next is 47 × 2 + 1 = 95.
5. Which word is closest in meaning to meticulous?
  • A) careful
  • B) hurried
  • C) generous
  • D) nervous
Answer: A) careful. Meticulous means taking great care over every detail. Careful is closest. Hurried is nearly the opposite.
