The papers

SET MathsMultiple choice, between 40 and 50 minutes.
SET EnglishMultiple choice, between 40 and 50 minutes, with a break between the two papers.
Second stage: Maths and EnglishTwo papers that are not multiple choice, each around 45 minutes to 1 hour.

No verbal or non-verbal reasoning

The school says plainly that the tests do not include verbal reasoning or non-verbal reasoning, at either stage. Preparation should go into maths and English.

One test, six schools

Six schools take part in the SET. Each school may set its own pass mark, and the selective schools run a second stage, so check each school's website.

The second stage follows quickly

This year the second-stage papers came on 26 September and 3 October 2026, soon after the SET on 15 September. Written maths and English practice needs to run alongside multiple-choice practice, not after it.

Five SET-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method.

1. What is 0.6 × 0.4?
  • A) 0.024
  • B) 0.24
  • C) 2.4
  • D) 24
Answer: B) 0.24. Ignore the decimal points first: 6 × 4 = 24. There are two decimal places in the question altogether, so the answer needs two as well: 0.24.
2. A bag holds 5 red, 3 blue and 4 green counters. What fraction of the counters are blue?
  • A) 1/3
  • B) 1/4
  • C) 3/4
  • D) 1/5
Answer: B) 1/4. Count all the counters: 5 + 3 + 4 = 12. Three of them are blue, which is 3/12. Divide the top and bottom by 3 to simplify it to 1/4.
3. Two angles of a triangle are 48° and 77°. What is the third angle?
  • A) 45°
  • B) 55°
  • C) 65°
  • D) 125°
Answer: B) 55°. The angles in a triangle add up to 180°. Add the two you know: 48 + 77 = 125. Subtract from 180: 180 − 125 = 55°.
4. Which word is closest in meaning to brief?
  • A) short
  • B) bright
  • C) heavy
  • D) late
Answer: A) short. Brief means lasting only a little time, or using few words. Short has the same meaning. The other three words describe light, weight and time of arrival.
5. Which word completes this sentence correctly? Neither of the boys ___ finished his homework.
  • A) have
  • B) has
  • C) are
  • D) were
Answer: B) has. Neither means not one and not the other, so it is treated as singular. A singular subject takes has, giving: Neither of the boys has finished his homework.
