The two stages

Stage One: English and MathsThe school says the tests are typically 40 to 60 minutes each, with a short break in between. All answers are marked on an answer sheet that is read by a computer.
Stage Two: English and MathsFor boys invited back. The school says these tests are similar in length to Stage One and need handwritten answers, and that some questions on the English paper need longer written answers.

No reasoning papers

Tiffin School tests English and Maths only. For this school, time is better spent on reading, vocabulary, written English and maths than on verbal or non-verbal reasoning.

How the final score is worked out

The school says every boy who takes Stage Two is ranked on a Combined Score, which is 50% English and 50% Maths. The English part is the Stage Two English score. The Maths part combines the Stage One and Stage Two scores in the ratio 2 to 3. So the Stage One English score is not part of the Combined Score.

Illustrative questions, not past papers

The school says it does not publish past papers. It has published illustrative English and Maths questions for both stages on its Year 7 admissions page, and these are the best guide to the style. On preparation, the school's FAQs say it cannot give guidance. It says it assumes that boys sitting the tests will have completed the National Curriculum in English and Maths for Year 5. It adds that some practice of working independently for an hour at a time may be helpful.

Two forms, two deadlines

You register with the school to sit the tests, and you also name the school on your local authority's application form. This year the school's registration closed at 12 noon on Tuesday 1 September 2026, and the local authority form is due by 31 October 2026. Boys applying for a sport or music aptitude place had an earlier deadline of 9am on Monday 6 July 2026.

Five Tiffin-style sample questions

These are our own questions, written in the style of the test so you can see the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method. The Stage Two papers ask for written answers; we use multiple choice here only so you can check quickly.

1. Two angles sit on a straight line. One is 68 degrees. How many degrees is the other?
  • A) 102
  • B) 112
  • C) 122
  • D) 292
Answer: B) 112. Angles on a straight line add up to 180 degrees. 180 − 68 = 112 degrees.
2. A water tank holds 2.4 litres. How many 150 ml cups can be filled from it?
  • A) 16
  • B) 18
  • C) 24
  • D) 36
Answer: A) 16. Change litres to millilitres: 2.4 litres is 2400 ml. Divide by the size of a cup: 2400 ÷ 150 = 16.
3. A jacket costs £80. In a sale, 20% is taken off. What is the sale price, in pounds?
  • A) 60
  • B) 64
  • C) 68
  • D) 72
Answer: B) 64. 10% of £80 is £8, so 20% is £16. Take it off: £80 − £16 = £64.
4. Which word is closest in meaning to tranquil?
  • A) lively
  • B) distant
  • C) gloomy
  • D) calm
Answer: D) calm. Tranquil means peaceful and still. Calm is closest. Lively is nearly the opposite.
5. Which sentence contains a relative clause?
  • A) The boy lost his hat and went home
  • B) The boy who lost his hat went home
  • C) Sadly, the boy lost his hat
  • D) The boy went home without his hat
Answer: B) The boy who lost his hat went home. A relative clause gives more information about a noun and begins with a word such as who, which or that. "Who lost his hat" tells us which boy, so it is a relative clause.
