What is in the assessment

Reasoning testsVerbal, non-verbal, spatial and quantitative reasoning. The school describes them as standardised tests of academic potential that are not based on school subjects, and doesn't publish their length.
Creative writingA short creative writing paper. The school doesn't publish the time allowed or the kind of task.
Maths extensionA brief mathematics extension exercise. The school doesn't say how long it is.

Mostly reasoning, not school subjects

Most of the assessment is reasoning: puzzles with words, shapes, space and numbers that test how a child thinks rather than what she has been taught. A strong vocabulary and quick, accurate arithmetic still help with the verbal and quantitative questions, so they are worth keeping up.

What the school doesn't publish

The school doesn't give timings, question counts or sample papers, and its page doesn't name a test provider. Our Bromley High-style practice paper uses timings we have estimated: three short reasoning sections, a maths extension and a short piece of writing. Treat it as practice of the skills, not a copy of the real assessment.

Five reasoning sample questions

These are our own questions, written to show the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method. Non-verbal and spatial reasoning need pictures, so practise those in the app.

1. Which word is closest in meaning to ancient?
  • A) modern
  • B) very old
  • C) broken
  • D) famous
Answer: B) very old. Ancient describes something from a very long time ago, so very old is closest. Modern means the opposite, and broken and famous describe different things.
2. What number comes next in the sequence: 3, 7, 15, 31, ?
  • A) 47
  • B) 62
  • C) 63
  • D) 64
Answer: C) 63. Each number is double the one before plus 1: 3 × 2 + 1 = 7, 7 × 2 + 1 = 15, 15 × 2 + 1 = 31. So the next is 31 × 2 + 1 = 63.
3. Hand is to glove as foot is to which word?
  • A) toe
  • B) sock
  • C) leg
  • D) walk
Answer: B) sock. A glove is worn over a hand, so we want the thing worn over a foot. That is a sock. A toe and a leg are parts of the body, and walk is something you do.
4. Which word is the odd one out: oak, ash, rose, elm?
  • A) oak
  • B) ash
  • C) rose
  • D) elm
Answer: C) rose. Oak, ash and elm are all types of tree. A rose is a flowering shrub, not a tree, so rose is the odd one out.
5. A pencil costs 35p. How much do 6 pencils cost?
  • A) £1.80
  • B) £2.10
  • C) £2.40
  • D) £2.15
Answer: B) £2.10. Multiply the price by the number of pencils: 35 × 6 = 210p. Change pence to pounds by dividing by 100, which gives £2.10.
