The computer-based assessment and the written paper

English20 minutes, on screen.
Verbal Reasoning10 minutes, on screen.
Maths30 minutes, on screen.
Non-Verbal Reasoning10 minutes, on screen.
Guided written paper30 minutes: a personal written response to a set of prompts.

Short, separately timed sections

The on-screen sections are short, so pace matters: ten minutes of verbal reasoning or non-verbal reasoning goes quickly. Practising short timed bursts of each subject, and moving on from a hard question rather than getting stuck, is good preparation.

The written paper is personal

The 30-minute paper asks for a personal response to prompts rather than a made-up story. Practise writing about her or his own experiences, interests and opinions clearly, with examples, in about half an hour. Question counts for the on-screen sections aren't published, so ours are estimates.

Five sample questions across the four subjects

These are our own questions, written to show the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method. Non-verbal reasoning needs pictures, so practise it in the app.

1. Which word is closest in meaning to vacant?
  • A) empty
  • B) busy
  • C) bright
  • D) noisy
Answer: A) empty. Vacant means not being used or having nobody in it, like a vacant seat. Empty is closest. Busy is nearly the opposite, and bright and noisy describe other things.
2. Which of these needs a question mark at the end?
  • A) Where did you leave your shoes
  • B) I left my shoes by the door
  • C) Please put your shoes away
  • D) My shoes are under the bed
Answer: A) Where did you leave your shoes. A question mark ends a sentence that asks something. Where did you leave your shoes is asking for information, so it needs one. The others tell or instruct, so they end with a full stop.
3. What is 30% of 150?
  • A) 30
  • B) 45
  • C) 50
  • D) 35
Answer: B) 45. Find 10% by dividing by 10: 150 ÷ 10 = 15. 30% is three lots of 10%: 15 × 3 = 45.
4. If CAT is written as DBU in a code, how is DOG written?
  • A) EPH
  • B) CNF
  • C) EPG
  • D) FQI
Answer: A) EPH. Each letter moves one place forward in the alphabet: C to D, A to B, T to U. Doing the same to DOG gives D to E, O to P and G to H, so the answer is EPH.
5. A swimming lesson starts at 16:50 and ends at 18:05. How many minutes long is it?
  • A) 75
  • B) 85
  • C) 65
  • D) 115
Answer: A) 75. Count on in steps: 16:50 to 17:00 is 10 minutes, 17:00 to 18:00 is 60 minutes and 18:00 to 18:05 is 5 minutes. That's 10 + 60 + 5 = 75 minutes.
