The two stages

Stage One: EnglishMultiple choice, answered on a sheet marked by computer.
Stage One: MathsSome multiple-choice questions and some where girls enter a number, on a sheet marked by computer.
Stage Two: English and MathsWritten tests in English and Maths for the girls invited after Stage One.

How the marks are combined

Scores are standardised and age-weighted. The combined mark is 60% Stage Two English and 40% Maths, where the Maths part counts Stage Two three times as much as Stage One. Girls are then ranked by combined mark within the school's admission categories.

Who gets places

After a girl with an EHCP naming the school and looked-after children who reach the required standard, up to 60 places go to girls at or above the 350th-ranked mark who live in the Inner Area, with Pupil Premium girls first. The remaining places go in rank order to girls in the Designated Area, then outside it, though the school doesn't expect places to reach girls outside the Designated Area.

Practising for it

The school publishes no timings or past papers. Our Tiffin Stage 1-style papers are English and Maths at 50 minutes each, which is our estimate. Stage Two is written, so practise comprehension with written answers and maths with working shown as well.

Five English and Maths sample questions

These are our own questions, written to show the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method.

1. Which word correctly completes the sentence: We went to ___ house after school.
  • A) there
  • B) their
  • C) they're
  • D) thier
Answer: B) their. Their means belonging to them, so their house is right. There is a place, they're is short for they are, and thier is a misspelling.
2. Which word is a verb in this sentence: Maya painted a bright picture?
  • A) Maya
  • B) painted
  • C) bright
  • D) picture
Answer: B) painted. A verb is a doing word. Painted is what Maya did. Maya and picture are nouns, and bright is an adjective describing the picture.
3. What is 0.6 written as a fraction in its simplest form?
  • A) 6/100
  • B) 3/5
  • C) 6/10
  • D) 2/3
Answer: B) 3/5. 0.6 means six tenths, which is 6/10. Both 6 and 10 divide by 2, so the simplest form is 3/5. 6/10 is the same value but not in its simplest form.
4. Sam has £20. He buys 3 books at £4.75 each. How much change does he get?
  • A) £5.75
  • B) £6.25
  • C) £4.25
  • D) £5.25
Answer: A) £5.75. Find the cost of the books: 3 × £4.75 = £14.25. Take it from £20: £20 − £14.25 = £5.75.
5. The mean of four numbers is 12. Three of them are 10, 15 and 9. What is the fourth number?
  • A) 12
  • B) 14
  • C) 16
  • D) 48
Answer: B) 14. If the mean of four numbers is 12, their total is 12 × 4 = 48. The three you know add up to 10 + 15 + 9 = 34, so the fourth is 48 − 34 = 14.
