What happens on the Assessment Day

Standardised reasoning assessmentVerbal, non-verbal, spatial and quantitative reasoning. The school doesn't publish the length or the number of questions.
Creative writingA short creative writing task.
Observational extension activityAn activity done on the day. The school doesn't describe it in more detail.

Reasoning first

The written part of the day is mainly reasoning: word, shape, space and number puzzles. There is no separate English comprehension or maths paper listed on the school's page, though good reading and number skills help with the verbal and quantitative questions.

What the school doesn't publish

The school doesn't give timings, question counts or sample papers. Our Sydenham & Dulwich Girls-style practice paper uses timings we have estimated: three short reasoning sections and a short piece of writing. The observational activity happens on the day and isn't part of our paper.

Five reasoning sample questions

These are our own questions, written to show the level. They are not taken from any real paper. Tap a question to see the answer and the method. Non-verbal and spatial reasoning need pictures, so practise those in the app.

1. Which word is opposite in meaning to generous?
  • A) kind
  • B) mean
  • C) rich
  • D) polite
Answer: B) mean. Generous means happy to give and share. The opposite is mean, which here means unwilling to give or share. Kind and polite are close to generous, not opposite.
2. What number comes next in the sequence: 2, 6, 18, 54, ?
  • A) 108
  • B) 162
  • C) 72
  • D) 158
Answer: B) 162. Each number is three times the one before: 2 × 3 = 6, 6 × 3 = 18, 18 × 3 = 54. So the next is 54 × 3 = 162.
3. Which word can go in front of all of these to make new words: ball, print, step, path?
  • A) hand
  • B) foot
  • C) sun
  • D) door
Answer: B) foot. Try each word in front of all four. Foot makes football, footprint, footstep and footpath. Hand fails with handstep and handpath, sun fails with sunball, and door fails with doorprint.
4. Bird is to flock as fish is to which word?
  • A) school
  • B) river
  • C) fin
  • D) pond
Answer: A) school. A group of birds is called a flock, so we want the word for a group of fish. That is a school (or shoal). A river and a pond are places, and a fin is part of a fish.
5. A film starts at 2:45 pm and lasts 1 hour 50 minutes. What time does it finish?
  • A) 4:25 pm
  • B) 4:35 pm
  • C) 4:45 pm
  • D) 3:35 pm
Answer: B) 4:35 pm. Add the hour first: 2:45 pm + 1 hour = 3:45 pm. Then add 50 minutes: 15 minutes takes you to 4:00 pm, and the other 35 minutes takes you to 4:35 pm.
